Here's your chance to marvel at the Mediterranean and do it by bike! Brimming with contrasts, Mallorca truly runs the gamut. Gentle hills roll toward seaside cliffs, Mediterranean forests give way to pristine coves and a massive limestone range looms to the west. Embrace this inspiring scenery on easy country routes and more challenging climbs and revel in the island’s heritage, hospitality and cuisine.
Arrive at your rural accommodation in Ruberts-Sencelles, where you will stay for four nights. Settle in, meld with your surroundings and breathe into a week of delight, Mallorcan style!
Set off among olive orchards and vineyards, cycling to historic Sineu, with its Gothic church, narrow lanes and lively terraces. Pedal onward to Petra, birthplace of the European ‘founder’ of California, and pause to visit the monastery and museum. The hilltop sanctuary of Bonany makes a prime spot for lunch, followed by a final section on quiet country lanes and dirt tracks back to your hotel.
Challenge: 41-48 km, 235/420 m ascent/descent.
Cross the Palma-Inca highway and roll into almond and olive orchards on the slopes of the Tramuntana as you ride toward the castle at Alaró. To avoid three kilometres on a busy road, take the ancient route from Binissalem, with one short non-cyclable section. Next, glide down inland roads then wind back through authentic rural scenery, passing elegant estates and age-old villages.
Challenge: 26-51 km, 75/250 m ascent/descent.
Snap photos of Mallorca’s classic windmills as your route turns south today. Opt for the climb up Puig de Randa (an extra 450m in ascent), stopping off at three shrines. Or cycle directly to Llucmajor then skirt the Puig, enjoying equally beautiful scenery. Later, you follow a dirt road to Montuiri and continue back to the hotel.
Challenge: 45-56 km, 325/570 m ascent/descent.
Bid your kind hosts farewell then ride north toward Costitx and Llubí on a fairly relaxed tour. From Campanet you pedal into a serene valley, passing carob and almonds orchards on the route to Pollença. Enduring a quick two kilometres in traffic is a small price to pay for today’s reward: the charm and comfort of your next hotel.
Challenge: 45 km, 235/335 m ascent/descent.
Press onward to the tourist mecca of Sa Pobla, with an optional detour via Muro and Santa Margalida. Traversing typical Mallorcan scenery among windmills and fields of artichokes, you come upon a tiny but exquisite corner of the world, the marshlands at S’Albufera, a peaceful nature reserve with a stunning variety of waterbirds.
Challenge: 42-68 km, 175/275 m ascent/descent.
Choose between an easy route exploring north coast beaches or a demanding ascent to Lluc Monastery, especially tough on hot days or in weekend traffic. At the end of your route, reflect on the week’s adventures, relax and raise a glass to the island of Mallorca!
Challenge: 16-46 km, 50/325 m ascent/descent.
